Lease vs. Buy Calculator
Compare an equipment lease with a loan-to-own scenario.
What Does the Lease vs. Buy Calculator Do?
The Lease vs. Buy Calculator compares the total lease payments on a piece of equipment with the total cost of buying it with a down payment and a loan over the same number of months. It shows the lease total, the buy total and the monthly buy payment.

Inputs, Results and Assumptions
What You Enter
- Equipment cost: purchase price.
- Monthly lease and lease months: the lease payment and its length.
- Buy rate % and buy down payment: the loan assumptions for the purchase option.
What the Results Show
- Lease total: monthly lease times months.
- Buy total: down payment plus all loan payments over the same months.
- Monthly buy payment: principal and interest on the amount financed.
Assumptions and Limits
- The loan term equals the lease term. The value of the equipment at the end, any lease buyout, maintenance, insurance and tax treatment are not modeled.
- Ownership has residual value that a lease may not; the totals alone do not decide which is better.
- Down payment cannot exceed the equipment cost.
The numbers pre-filled in the fields are sample values so the tool shows a result on first load. They are not CMCC rates, quotes or offers.
Lease vs. Buy Calculator FAQs
Is the lower total always the better choice?
No. A purchase leaves you owning equipment with some remaining value, while a lease may include different end-of-term options. Tax treatment also differs; speak with your tax advisor.
Why use the same number of months for both?
It makes the two totals comparable over one period. If the equipment would be kept longer than the lease term, the real comparison would also include later years.
Does CMCC provide leases or loans?
No. CMCC is an advisory and brokerage firm and works with independent funding providers; see equipment financing and leasing and the equipment financing guide.
